The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that imported health functional foods have increased by an annual average of 21.4% over the past three years ('18~'20), accounting for 33.8% of the domestic health functional food market (as of '19).

The main importing countries are the United States, China, Germany, Canada and India, accounting for 78.3% of the total imports.

The top import items for the last 3 years were ⯅multi-vitamin and mineral products ⯅fructo-oligosaccharides ⯅EPA and DHA-containing products ⯅nutrient/functional complex products ⯅protein products, which accounted for 59.0% of the total imports. .

The first place is multi-vitamin mineral products, which imported 3,509 tons in 20 years, accounting for 17.7% of the total import volume, and 1,648 tons (8.3%) of products that combine nutrients and functional ingredients were also imported, ranking fourth. (296% increase compared to '19).

In 2018, imports of protein in the 3rd place and calcium in the 5th place gradually declined, while nutrient-functional complex products rose to 4th place in 2020.
It was analyzed that the demand for health functional foods is changing from a single ingredient to a preference for complex ingredient products.

In the case of fructooligosaccharide, which ranked 24th (107 tons) in 2018, its import volume increased sharply to 1,629 tons in 2019 and 3,228 tons in 2020.
It can be seen that the increasing interest in gut health was reflected in demand.
